Baucentrum (which means “building center”) endeavors to create sustainable architecture that is symbiotic with its environment, sensitive to the client's budget, responsive to user needs, compatible with the neighborhood, and crafted with artistry. The firm
strives to provide exemplary architectural and urban design, master planning, documentation and consulting services; and to be an independent institute active in research, consultancy, and education. We are committed to using state of the art design and construction technologies that offer more creative and efficient building concepts for the client. Principal Architect, Philip Bona establishes the basis of experience for the firm and has provided these services to private and public sector clients since 1974. He is a California Licensed Architect, Certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, and a San Diego Community Leader. Design Architect, Letrice Sherrillo has provided professional architectural and planning services to the private and public sector since 1990. Her work has focused in San Diego, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Baucentrum was initially founded in the San Francisco Bay Area by Principal Philip John Bona in 1989 after
15 years of diverse architectural practice with other firms. Originating in San Mateo California, the firm relocated in 1995 to San Carlos, central to the San Francisco Bay Area. Its client base focused on civic, education, commercial, health care and residential projects. In 1997, Philip transitioned the firm's interests and assets to DES Architects+Engineers (a 180 person firm) in nearby Redwood City as Senior Associate overseeing K-12 and community college education projects. In 2002, he again transitioned the firm's interests to WLC Architects (a 100 person firm) based in Rancho Cucamonga, CA where he acted as Deputy Master Architect for the West Contra Costa Unified School District, among other masterplanning, construction management and as Senior Project Architect for California K-12 and community college projects. In 2007, Philip relocated to San Diego, CA taking the position of Assistant Vice President for Architecture and Planning with the Centre City Development Corporation (CCDC) under the San Diego Redevelopment Agency. In May of 2009, after a restructuring of City and Redevelopment Departments, he returned to the private sector and reorganized his former firm in San Diego as Baucentrum Urban Studio.

Baucentrum has been the realization in the United States of a concept which was conceived in the Netherlands of Europe at the outset of World War II. To aid reconstruction of that region after the war, a bureau (a one stop shop) was created to provide to the public with information, consultancy, education and research in the area of building design, building technology and construction economics. Similarly, we have set out to offer these types of services to
the people of California from San Francisco to San Diego.

Mr. Bona founded Baucentrum immediately following the devastating 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake with the intent of aiding in the subsequent reconstruction of the damaged region to begin that year. As the firm continued to assist in reconstruction efforts after the 1991 East Bay fire storm, it prompted Baucentrum Philosophy of committed community outreach through disaster assistance and reconstruction. Further, during the 1993 Conference of the Union of International Architects and the AIA World Congress of Architects in Chicago, Mr. Bona proudly signed, on behalf of Baucentrum, and personally committed to the Declaration of Interdependence for a Sustainable Future.
